Yuzen Japanese Restaurant, Seal Rock, Oregon

Oregon April 2009

Anyone who knows me knows I love sushi.
I have spent the last couple of years traveling,
hit Europe twice, more than a handful of states
in search of the best sushi.

I think I found it.

Yuzen Japanese Restaurant in Seal Rock Oregon.

I didn't think I'd find anything close to Blue Chili in New York.
Completely different atmosphere but equally satiating.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have no qualms about
walking up to other peoples tables politely asking to hijack
their food for a photo or two, or three.....These two women were
kind enough to accommodate my request, as were a few other tables. ha.

I know I've found the best tempura I have EVER EATEN.
It was so light, the vegetables crisp, and yet the whole thing
just melted in your mouth. I didn't know it was possible.

Prices were reasonable, the service outstanding.
And I'm really picky when it comes to waiting on tables.
I've spent good portion of my career
doing just that. We waited and wanted for nothing.

A picture says a thousand words...so let this review speak with images.
It is after all what I do best.

We ordered nigiri, a few rolls, miso soup, steak and tempura...
I hope you're drooling when you finish reading this.

I cannot end this post without thanking Monique for a wonderful trip,
which I will write more about in future blogs. I'm still playing catch up.
Her hospitality and friendship go beyond words...

What beautiful appetizing photos..the lighting is exquisite..I love the 2 ladies.. in both the 2 lady shots:)

What an unusual name..Monique:)

The location of the resto..is it there on the water? That's almost enough for me..I love the boats the companions food is served in ,and look at their faces:)
Love this post I do.

I thought you'd appreciate the name!~

There is water, across the street, no you can't see it while you dine, but it makes for a nice walk on the beach after you eat.

And we did....

: )

I'm glad you like this one...

I love your shots here... really cosy. If I'm there at the ladies corner, after a fabulous meal, I will doze off there! LOL...just joking ok? :-D

The fish is eel... unagi. Best unagi comes from Japan which is less fat compared to the China made unagi which is cheaper. A lot of Japanese restaurants in Europe owned my Chinese (not that I don't trust or dislike them) who provided cheaper eats but it's the taste of some ingredients used were slightly different. If you're not that particular,it's ok. In this example the Unagi...I prefer the Japanese unagi which is slightly expensive and less fat even though I'm not a fan of it. This made the fish cripsy and not oily when fried :-D

In Japan, they have Eel Day in Summer (Doyo no Ushinohi) which falls on the hottest day in Summer. It's belief that if you eat unagi on this special day, you're strong like an ox (is cow applicable?) because ushi means 'Ox'. It's Unagi everywhere :-D In donburi, onigiri, bento, etc the lots! Btw, if you can have wild eels, they are the best but due to decline of the wild species, farmed eels is 2nd choice :-(

You know, I'm starting to feel like I should say something more original than "gorgeous photo", but it happens to be the truth. I opened up this post, saw the first photo, and said, "wow". The sushi photos were just beautiful too. I love it when I find little restaurants like this.

Pixen you are a culinary wealth of information...I like you hanging out on my page.
Seriously. I want to know what day that is.
I will be eating unagi! I am strong like ox.
LOL and I will be there to put a pillow under your head at the table. hahaaha

Hayley, coming from you that means more than I can say. Little restaurants rarely disappoint, yanno?

OMG, what a great post, Kathleen. I had no idea such a wonderful sushi restaurant was so close by. I'm definitely going to drive to Seal Rock to give it a try. I'm a big tempura fan too. Your photos are first rate and I love travel posts like this. Thanks.
